I really want to love XO Bistro. It’s a great walk from my house, it’s dining room is intimate, there’s a nice patio, the staff is friendly, and parking isn’t as hard to find as other places on Cap Hill. And they have frites. The menu overall looks good. But I’ve found that I’m disappointed with the food the few times I’ve tried it out. Last night was no exception. Cam and I wanted to get out of the house for a bit, and thought we’d give it another go. We started with the simple, petite, green salad (plenty for 2 to share for an appetizer). It was tasty, but overly dressed. The vinaigrette really started making the greens soggy, and the goat cheese (which I would normally love) was just too clumpy. The walnuts were still crisp, and were a nice touch. For entree’s, we both had specials. Cam’s was a linguini with a duck confit, green beans and mushrooms (I didn’t try it… but he thought it was ok… not great); I had a fillet of halibut with goat-cheese mashers, green-beans and an avocado salsa. The fish was moist, but completely overpowered by the salsa. The salsa itself would have been good in small doses. I would have loved to be craving more of it, rather than eating it by the spoonful. The green beans were soggy which is always disappointing. The potatoes were probably the best part… still nice chunks (I prefer mine lumpy) and the goat cheese filled out the flavor rather than overwhelming it. In the end, it was average bistro food and I missed the fabulous meals that we had at Casis, the former occupants of the space.
